Riding along the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Sierra del Rincón

The Sierra del Rincón was declared Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in July 2005. It is just one hour by car from Madrid. It has really spectacular landscapes, beautiful mountainous towns with wooden and stone constructions, a great variety of ecosystems and being the example of reservation of an amazing biodiversity, it is a place that you must visit. There are more than 1.000 species of animals and plants, from which 140 are weird, endemic animals and others appear in the Regional Catalogue of Threatened Species. It seems that time has stopped.


Day 1. Arrival and greeting – Buitrago de Lozoya

You will transfer from Madrid airport (cost not included) to the riding centre Buitrago, where you will be met by your guide, Dani. Equestrian center visit, to check facilities, horses and evaluation of riders level. First dinner and hotel in Buitrago de Lozoya.

Day 2. Buitrago de Lozoya - Horcajuelo de la Sierra

After your breakfast you will start from the riding centre in Buitrago de Lozoya, a small village in the middle of the mountains with traditional old stone houses. 974 meters of altitude. From here you will explore a beautiful part of Spain, riding free from traffic and walkers, following secret trails in the wonderful countryside. You will reach Horcajuelo de la Sierra (1.145 meters of altitude), one of the best preserved scenic reserves in the region of Madrid with a rich and varied nature. Its isolation and way of life is one of the few regions that have managed to retain almost intact. Dinner and overnight in Horcajuelo de la Sierra.

Day 3. Horcajuelo de la Sierra - La Hiruela

You are going to ride through a spectacular landscape of high mountains. You will ride to La Hiruela (1.257 meters of altitude) located of the east side of mountain range Somosierra. The tour will go for the IE-041 Equestrian Itinerary.
Depending on the time of year and meteorological conditions, you will arrive at the peak Pico Peña Cebollera Vieja also called Tres Provincias (2.129 meters of altitude). You will ride back to the IE-041.Dinner and overnight in La Hiruela.

Day 4. La Hiruela - Puebla de la Sierra

This morning ride will be through woods and beautiful mountains. You will follow the Equestrian Itineray from yesterday. Lunch will be at Puebla de la Sierra, a magic small village with traditional old stone houses. 1.163 meters of altitude. In the afternoon, you will follow the awesome Collado Salinero and El Ramal route. Overnight will be at a beautiful and comfortable rural hotel in Puebla de la Sierra.

Day 5. Puebla de la Sierra - Montejo de la Sierra

Today will be an other amazing long day ride, a day with great contrasts in the landscape. You will take again the important IE-041 Equestrian Itinerary through large areas of oaks. Our progressive ride get to highland Montejo de la Sierra (2.000 meters of altitude), close to the mountains of Somosierra in the Sistema Central. You will visit the XVIth century little church Ermita de la Soledad. Dinner and overnight in Montejo de la Sierra.

Day 6. Montejo de la Sierra – Prádena del Rincón

After breakfast you will enjoy this excellent terrain for riding, mostly open fields with magnificent views and paths that follow the course of Jarama´s river. Important beech forest area called Hayedo de Montejo. The landscapes are full of light, colour and nature: oaks, elm trees, holm oaks, riparian forest and aromatic plants. You will be surrounded by the awesome mountain range of Sierra de Somosierra and the Macizo de Ayllon. Lunch, dinner and accommodation at Prádena del Rincón (1.800 meters of altitude), a small charming village.

Day 7. Prádena del Rincón – Buitrago de Lozoya

On your final riding day, there will be great views of the peaks of the Sierra de Somosierra. You will descent towards the landscape where you started. Your return path leads to Buitrago de Lozoya.

Day 8. Breakfast and departure

After breakfast you will be transferred to Madrid. All riders will be transferred at the same time. If any rider needs to arrive in Madrid prior to noon, an alternative transfer will be arranged (at an extra cost).

About the guides certifications: All activities are carried out with and by professionals in the equestrian and riding areas. Equestrian riding technicians and equestrian guides. They are highly qualified as equestrian and mountain guides with extensive professional experience. There is also a qualified guide specialized in biology and environmental education to accompany all activities.
Maximum weight of the rider: 95 Kg
Remarks: Prior meeting to review the technical features of the route, helmet use, and riders own riding kit (helmet, pants, and gloves, waterproof ...).
Duration of the equestrian activity: 6 days. 6 hours per day.
Required Experience: Level 3 - Intermediate

1 - Beginner (equivalent to Below Gallop 1)
Rider with limited experience, unable to trot or gallop.
2 - Novice (equivalent to Gallop 2)
Rider is capable of mounting and dismounting unassisted, controls at the walk, moderate length posting trots and short canters.
3 - Intermediate (equivalent to Gallop 4)
Rider with a firm walk, confident and in control at all paces throughout (including trotting and cantering), but does not ride regularly.
4 - Advanced (equivalent to Gallop 5)
Intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly and is comfortable in the saddle for at least six hours per day.
5 - Expert (equivalent to Gallop 7)
Rider who meets the above requirements and is capable of handling a spirited horse in open country.

Should have Gallops qualifications, we show the equivalence of such qualifications the minimum level required for the route.
